BEYOND INSIGHT ACTIVITIES DORSET: A FEW LOCAL SPOTS WORTH A VISIT NEAR OUR WOODS (2026 GUIDE)
Once you’ve finished firing arrows, shooting crossbows and hurling axes into targets at our Tolpuddle ranges, then what can you do?
Whether you’re staying in Dorchester, Wareham, or the Purbecks, here are some of our favorite local spots that will help make the most of a full day out in Dorset, before or after a session at Insight Activities.
1.Sculpture by the Lakes – 5 mins away
Sculpture by the Lakes in Dorset is a 26-acre, tranquil oasis that seamlessly blends curated art with natural beauty. It features a stunning collection of bronze sculptures set within landscaped gardens and is recognized as an accredited botanical garden, making it a peaceful, artistic, and natural retreat just a few minutes away from us.
2. Thorncombe Woods: Walking, National Trust visitor centre and Café. Birthplace of Thomas Hardy – 10 mins away
If you’re looking for a lovely walk then just 10 minutes away is Thorncombe Wood. It has 64 acres of ancient woodland and heathland to explore.
- The Walk: There are various waymarked trails through the trees that lead through woodland and heathland. It’s the perfect place to let the dogs explore while you enjoy the scenery and fresh Dorset air.
- The Café: The Hardy’s Birthplace Visitor Centre features a family run independent café that is 100% dog-friendly. They serve fantastic local coffee and homemade cakes, ideal for a post archery refuel.
3 . The Wise Man Inn (East Knighton) – 10 mins away
If you fancy some great food then just a few minutes from Thorncombe Woods, or just over 10 mins from us is The Wise Man Inn, a local legend when it comes to food.
- This is proper, award winning gastropub cooking in a relaxed, rustic setting. Think locally sourced meats and inventive seasonal dishes. Also a great specials fish and seafood menu, again always fresh and locally sourced.
- It’s famous for its warm welcome and lovely garden. In addition, they are also completely dog friendly, making it the perfect spot for a post axe throwing feast!
4. Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre – 10 mins away
Very close to the Tank Museum is Monkey World – a world renowned 65 acre sanctuary for rescued primates. It’s heart warming, educational, and a great way to spend a relaxed afternoon in Dorset.
5.The Tank Museum (Bovington) – 15 mins away
The famous Tank Museum is not far from us.
- The Tank Museum brings the story of tanks and their crews to life in an awe-inspiring modern museum you will spend hours exploring
- Home to the world’s best collection of armored vehicles. It’s powerful, immersive, and a fantastic all weather option for the whole family
6. The Dorset Adventure Park in Corfe – 25 mins away
If you haven’t had enough adrenaline, then head towards Corfe Castle and the Dorset Adventure Park. Approx 20 mins from us.
- It has a massive outdoor floating aqua park set across two lakes. Much like our New Forest site’s proximity to their water park, this is the ultimate day out if looking for a land and water experience.
- It’s a high energy follow on from our Archery & Axes or Medieval Trio sessions, ideal for stags, hens, and active families.
7. Coastal Escape: Studland Beach – 40 mins away
As beaches go, they don’t get much better than Studland Bay , a bit further south into the Purbecks
- Managed by the National Trust, there’s over four miles of golden sand that offer stunning views of Old Harry Rocks and the Jurassic coast.
- Excellent choice for families, NT carparking, toilet facilities
Dog Friendly: Most of the beach is dog-friendly year-round (with some seasonal lead restrictions). It’s the perfect place for a final run around and sea dip before heading home.
